Default Switched from dail-up to Satellite

Just switched from dail-up to satellite and I can't connect to arenanet anymore. I've turned the firewall off, and was told that ports TCP 80 and 6112 are open, but not sure how to check of change. And I'm about ready to switch back to dail-up. Any help out there?

To be honest, it's going to be worse.

Satellite = God awful pings, unplayable.

I've been battling with dial up and satellite for a couple of years now. Sometimes the satellite connects and then an update by either GW or Hughesnet changes it. Hughesnet doesn't tell you when they do updates but a few days later ppl on the net are talking/complaining about it in satellite forums. I found if I re-install GW with the GW client it will work again 90% of the time. I don't know why this works. I only know it does.

Satellite lag is very different from dial up lag. It is alot more subtle. You don't always realize that you are stuck. You are just behind in the action and then you catch up. I get booted less often with the satellite than with dial up.

Good Luck.

Waiting for wi-max to blanket the planet. LOL. Hope it won't be bad for the planet.

That may be true for playing, but downloading would help, and play the game on dail-up. I know some people are doing this, but haven't figured out how.

That's strange. I have been playing on satellite connection for years now (it's the only broadband connection available out here) and have never had trouble starting up the game, unless the signal just isn't reaching the satellite, in which case I don't have any internet connection at all.

I would recommend trying the reinstall, as Satu-Wyvern suggested, first. Just delete the client and the DAT file from your Guild Wars folder and use the installer from either the discs or on the guildwars.com website. If that doesn't work, hopefully somebody a bit more knowledgeable can help out.

Yes, there is lag for sure, but it is far from unplayable. I usually range from 700 to 1200 ping rate (which I know would be considered "unplayable" by some), but as Satu-Wyvern said, the lag is different. You kind of get used to it after a little while and can predict things better.

I can still play a mean interrupt ranger with my connection speed, though it's hard for me to catch 1 second cast time skills. You should see how good my interrupting is when I get to play on a lower ping rate connection, though .

I personally don't uninstall anything. I go to the support page on the guildwars.com and click on the client. It basically asks you if you want to repair or install. Repair usually works. Bobby Sox is absolutely right its great for downloads.

Another thing to try is disable your network connections. Try to load GW. It will tell you it cannot connect. Then re-enable the satelite connection only. This works for a friend of mine.

It is playable. It just takes getting used to and try not to get frustrated and overclick. You will develop tactics that a different from fast connection players. However, when the game lags you will play better than the fast connection ppl that don't understand lag. The only character I have found difficult to play are PvP monks. Lagging at critical heal time makes your party very very cranky and rightfully so. LOL.

satellite internet actually use a dial-up connection as the upload. yes, satellite can download at ridiculous speeds, but the upload is simply not there. unfortunately, gaming is often more dependent on your upload than download. that's why you'll often find yourself behind, even though the game appears to run smooth: data is streamed to you very quickly, but your response will get delayed.

Actually, gaming is more dependent on latency. Satellite has higher latency because of the raw distance involved, explaind here. That said, a 1200 ms ping is unbelievably bad. That's 1.2 seconds between all communication between yourself and the game. Meaning, it takes 1.2 seconds for them to get your click, and 1.2 seconds for you to receive acknowledgment. I applaud you for having the patience to deal with such a thing, it would drive me into fits of fire-spitting rage.

Edit: Also, most satellite internet these days transmits upstream from the satellite dish, eliminating the dialup connection. The dish actually communicates with a separate modem between it and the computer using DOCSIS 2, just like a cable modem. A lethargic cable modem.
